Question

Massive lag when dragging / rearranging images

I was so focused on all the other bugs initially (some of which are now gone in the Beta) that this issue wasn't the top of my list for complaints. But man...dragging photos around in Bridge (Beta 13.0.2.630, and previous) takes FOREVER. I have an M1 Ultra Mac Studio + 64GB of RAM and basically nothing should slow this thing down, but Bridge is awful when trying to rearrange images. I end up zooming all the way out (ie smallest icon size) in order to move stuff around with any reasonable speed (which of course means it's not always easy to tell where it's moving since the image thumbs are so small).

With icons at ~1/3rd zoomed in (the thumb square is ~270px) It can take 10-15 SECONDS to move a single row while dragging images up or down. It's maddening.

Can I assume others are having this issue? I didn't find it specifically listed when I searched this forum.

Bridge in 2025 remains glacially slow in moving images in a folder. Moving a single image in a folder with 1100 images to the top of the folder by dragging and dropping is frustratingly slow to the point of asking Adobe what's the problem with all of their super technology. Cannot this process be speeded up!

Currently, I'm using 13.0.2.626 (the release version of 13.0.2), but even when I was using the .630 version, I was not getting that action.

I have the same machine as you and am using Ventura 13.1.

Just to make sure I'm understanding, how many columns are your thumbnails so that when you move a "single row," how many images is that? I'd like to replicate what you're doing to see if I can replicate the problem. Can you take a screenshot of what you're doing? How big are the images in storage size? What format are the images?

Also, have you tried purging the cache for that folder?

Hey Gary

I'm also on 13.1. My thumbnails are currently 7 per row. If I zoom out (ie smaller Thumbs) it will move nominally faster in a folder with a smaller number of files (the one I'm in now has 125 images, CR3, total of 2.6GB worth of files). The larger I make the thumbs the slower it drags them. I can make a screen recording at some point if that helps.

Hi Cary, the first folder I went to only had a couple a dozen images so I let Bridge open all of the sub-folder images providing me with a little over 600 images.

I grabbed 4, 7, and 10 images along a row and dragged them to some other location without a spit of time lag. These images were DNG (I always convert to DNG).

And that got me wondering if the fact that Bridge has to be mindful to know that the sidecar file is not being lost or forgotten. One of the reasons I convert my images to DNG is to not have to worry about misplacing the XMT files. I found a folder with a few CR2 (and XMT) images and duplicated and duplicated until I had about 100 files. Again, the time to move was without any time lag.

One semi-related point: at first, I was duplicating the files in the Finder, and it was essentially instant. But, when I tried duplicating the files in Bridge, there was a considerable drag in time.

Did you try purging the cache for that folder? If so, did you find that this made any difference?
