Question

Navigate between bridge and photoshop

Okay, I feel like a complete idiot asking this question, but here goes anyway: I am using Windows 10. I recently upgraded to Creative Cloud from an older version of Photoshop. The older version combined Bridge, Raw and PS. As you know, the CC versions are separate -- which is mostly a good thing. But now I'm haiving trouble mastering the software. When I open an image in Bridge and then into Camera Raw all goes well until it is time to navigate between RAW and Photoshop or Bridge and Photoshop. The older version allowed you to switch within the application and was fairly simple. The new version (which isn't new...just new to me) is separated into Bridge, Raw and PS. (sorry if I'm repeating the obvious) I have no problem opening any of these apps or using them to edit images. BUT - and this is the stupid part -- I can't figure out how to switch from RAW to go back to PS or from Bridge to PS. Every time when I complete editing and want to leave that app to go into PS I have to close out the other app using Task Manager, which I know isn't right. There is no EXIT under File or other command and no X for closing the app. I can't close RAW or Bridge and return to PS without having to shut down all three apps --- which is insane and I know I'm missing something obvious to other users. Da-Hah. Please, can someone walk me through this process? I know it is probably obvious, but that's the problem...what is obvious to most is anything but obvious to me. Thanks!

Hi Carney,

OK, first understand that ACR is a plugin to translate the raw image into something that can be shown on the screen and opened in PS. Just like you need MS Word to understand a Word document so that you can copy and paste the contents into another application, ACR is used to access the contents of a raw file.

Now, while it doesn't make a BIG difference, you can select where you want ACR to be opened from: Bridge or PS. To control this, there are several places but if you generally double-click your raw files, you can set this to open either in Bridge or in Ps here:

Once you have the image open in ACR there are three options available to you on the bottom right corner:

If you click "Cancel," the image and ACR will close and nothing will have changed, you are back to where you are before you you started with that image.

If you click "Done," that will close ACR but save whatever you did in ACR either in a side car file (an xmp file) or if you are working with DNG, JPG, or TIF images, it will store the changes inside the file as all three of these file types are container files. If you click on "Open," the file will open as a regular image in PS. If you select "Open as Object," the file will open as a smart object in PS. If you "Open as Copy," the image will open as an image in PS but it will be a copy of that image and anything you do will not affect the original image as the original image (which will have all of the adjustments you made in ACR as well as the copy you now have in open in PS) is now back in the folder where it came from.

I hope that breaks down the process a bit for you, let us know.

Gary - thank you, but what you shared doesn't address my issue. I accept the blame, because it is hard to explain what is happening. I suspect that something has happened to my install of Raw and/or Bridge, or perhaps the entire suite. The menu options just are not appearing as normal and there is no menu option to exit/close RAW or Bridge and return to PS. So, I did what some recommend when your system begins going crazy: after running a deep scan to rule out malware, I decided to remove everything Creative Suite and do a reinstall. We..l..l...perhaps not such a good idea. Now although the suite says it has installed, it will not open and keeps prompting for a password, but then not allowing me to enter the password or even showing the place to enter the password. UGH! I'll figure out this issue and then reinstall the suite and see what happens.

Where this all started: I opened an image into Raw converter and edited the image. I then saved the image and went to exit and return to PS. Only on screen there was no visible option to exit or switch back to PS. Right clicking the image did nothing. There was no drop down menu or option on the menu bar to exit, close or go to PS. Just the standard tool bar with editing options and sliders. If and when I am able to CS back operational, I'll do a screen capture and post the page so you can better understand what I am looking at and what I'm trying to do.

Hi Carney,

OK, I apologize, I did not fully understand the issues you are having.

Since obviously this is not what any Adobe or any software should be doing. However, I believe that what's happening with Bridge, ACR, and PS is a symptom that something is wrong with your computer. Unfortunately I'm a Mac guy so I cannot provide ANY suggestions or recommendations on what could or should be done.

FWIW I recently was having some strange issues with software on my computer and had to go through a slew of maintenance processes to get me back to normal. Simply, it can happen to any and all of us at some time.

But I would start there, hopefully some slick Windows users can chime in here to offer suggestions on how and what to do. THEN, once you know your system is back to where it should be, than continue to get your software working the way it should be working.

Sorry I cannot help more.
