Question

NEF files from Z6 showing as icons not thumbnails

Hi

In Bridge 2020, NEF files from my Z6 have stopped showing as thumbnail images and only appear as icons. This happened yesterday (they were showing as thumbnails before that), no idea why.

I can't update to Bridge 2021 as I'm running High Sierra (the most recent OS I can go to on my old MacbookPro - which works fine, so I've no reason to want to shell out for a newer model!) and as far as I'm aware Bridge 2021 requires OS 10.14 and above.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Rudolf Abraham

Hi rudolf,

Did you by any chance update (or was auto-updated) to a more recent Photoshop and Adobe Camera Raw (ACR)?

Do all of your NEF files appear as icons or only the very new ones?

One thing you can try is to convert your NEF files to DNG files via the DNG converter.

FWIW, I've been converting my Canon files to DNG since, well, forever. I prefer the DNG format for all of the advantages they provide.

Hi Gary

Many thanks for your helpful reply.

I did in fact download ACR, so I guess that's where the problem lies.

For the past decade(!) I've been editing raw files from D700 bodies using my old copy of Photoshop CS4, along with Affinity Photo and Nik Suite, and Bridge as file browser – which all worked fine together, but I needed to make some changes to this workflow having recently started using a Z6 (the files from which were obviously not going to be recognised by CS4). That's why I tried downloading ACR, however I was unable to open the Z6 NEFs directly through that as it didn't recognise CS4 as an existing licensed product (I'd mistakenly assumed it would!). I also tried downloading the DNG converter, but didn't have any success with that, I guess because it's long past being compatible with CS4.

Old (D700) NEFs still preview/open fine from Bridge 2020.

I'm still much more 'at home' working in Bridge/Photoshop (as oposed to developing raw files in Affinity), I'm just not keen on the CC model – but I can see I'm going to have to update at least one more part of my workflow.

Thanks again for your help

Best wishes

Rudolf
