Problem with bridge and ratings

Hi,

I am having a problem with bridge where I can't change the metadata of the rating (stars) of my photographs.

Here is the workflow of the problem.

1. If the rating is not, or has never been set in windows, bridge works fine to set it.

2. If the rating is then set in bridge, the rating can be changed from bridge again without a problem.

3. If the rating is then changed in windows/EXIF data bridge will reflect that change.

4. If the rating is then changed in bridge after it is changed in windows/EXIF data (in step 3) the rating of the photo will not be changed in the EXIF data, BUT bridge will keep the new rating only visible in bridge. (I have no idea where this data is being kept.)

5. If the rating is changed in windows after it is changed in bridge after it is changed in windows (steps 3 and 4) the new EXIF rating will override the rating that bridge shows that doesn't get written to the EXIF data (step 4 will be ignored and the new EXIF data will take precedence).

In short: once a rating is set from windows or the EXIF data bridge treats that rating a READ ONLY and will not modify it again, EVER.

My photos are on a removable hard drive and I cant move them in my workflow. (that is to my the main drive) Oddly if they have NO rating assigned bridge seems to assign it just fine, but once it is set from windows, it doesn't seem to be able or willing to update that field.

Any help?

Thanks

I have the exact same problem. I just installed Adobe Bridge and was testing the star rating feature. I noticed that if I set the star rating in Windows file manager, Bridge won't override the original star rating on the file, but it appears to change in Bridge. Bridge has no problem changing the star rating of previously unrated files. I have changed the permissions on the files and folders to ensure every type of user has read & write priviledges, but it had no effect. For this reason alone, I'm hesitant to use Bridge because I have thousands of existing photos with star ratings and I rely heavily on these when doing work. I need to know that if I change the star rating in Bridge, it will be reflected on the file.
