Qualifying product for Adobe Raw?

Hi, I am using Adobe Photoshop CS5 quite happily thank you but I want to edit Nikon .NEF raw files using the newer Adobe Bridge! (Edit in Bridge, save as Tif, open in CS5)
Despite owning a registered copy of Photoshop CS5 I get the message; 'Camera Raw editing is not enabled.
Camera raw editing requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature' But surely my CS5 does qualify right?

Correct answer gary_sc

Have you tried converting your NEF files to DNG files using the DNG Converter first?

CS5 does not qualify, you would need a paid subscription to Adobe CC.

Many thanks!.....I feared that might be the case!

What I really would like is a copy of CS6 the very last version able to purchase!.......

Guess I'll carry on using the Nikon s'ware 'NX'.....rather clunky but does the job! 😞

Hi Gary, Oh yes I know I have that option but it's just a straight conversion! I just like Adobe raw and the tools it provides before finally saving! I just need to know if PS CS5 qualifies for me to use the later Adobe Raw. Thanks for the info though!

Hi Isobel,

No, not quite: The engine in ACR is updated as new raw formats are introduced. However, newer raw formats are not understood in older ACRs. So, if you convert your raw images into the DNG format, older ACRs can understand the format.

FWIW, I've been converting my canon raw images into DNGs since the very beginning of raw formats with Adobe and never looked back.

And to answer your question: no. You must use the appropriate ACR for your Bridge. This is because they are built to work together. A newer ACR is speaking a differeng language than the older Bridge. But the DNG format can speak in any ACR language that Bridge understands as well.

Please try it and let me know if it works.
