Question

Renaming deletes healing

I am stunned by this.

I have a RAW image file. I go to rename. I rename the file. Then, all my healing work on the image disappears! The color corrections remain, but all the healing brush corrections vanish. It even does so when I open the image in RAW.

On PC using version 11.0.1.109.

gary_sc is 100% correct.

Are you renaming using Bridge or using Windows File Explorer (not advised)?

If you rename the files using File Explorer you MUST rename the XMP files too and they are hidden files so unless you tell Windows to display hidden files you probably won't even know they are there.

Bridge will do the XMP renaming automatically when you rename the parent files which is why this method is strongly advised.

If he was right, why did the other changes not get removed? Why only the healing corrections, and nothing else?

OK, fair point. I confess that I have never come across this before so I am at a loss!

Have you actually checked that the associated XMP files are present in the same folder as the parent files though?

If they are not there then that might explain a lot.

If they are there then, once again, I am at a loss.

Have you considered converting your files to DNG format before you edit them?

One big plus with that is that edits are written directly into the files themselves (they are container files) - no pesky XMP files files to worry about. You are able to embed the original RAW file within the DNG file too so that it is extractable should you ever require it. I have used this practice for many years and find it highly beneficial.

Hi, @johns56813176, I'm on a Mac, so I cannot 100% test this, but the first thing I can think of is that when you renamed the file, it lost connection to its XMP (sidecar) file. NORMALLY, Bridge does an excellent job keeping these two together, and maybe that's the issue you are having. OR are you moving the files (and not the sidecar files) during your renaming process?

Look in the original folder for an xmp file with the original name.

FWIW, knowing me and how I can get disorganized is one of the reasons why I convert all of my images to DNG format. With DNG, the sidecar file is contained within the DNG file as it is done with JPG and TIF formats.

I thought the same thing, but if the sidecar was getting was disconnected, why did it keep the other changes I made? Why only remove the healing brush and nothing else?

It's also never done this before, despite doing it hundreds of times.
