Question

Renaming in Bridge keeping sort order manual. I now want to keep that order in Lightroom Classic

I have renamed a whole batch of photos using Bridge. They are sorted manually. However, when I import them in Lightroom they are in alphabetical order. I realise now that it is because they are saved in alphabetic order on the original PG folder and that is not altered by Bridge. How can I overcome this?

Here's something to keep in mind: whatever order they are in when you rename them, that's the order they will have alphabetically at that point.

If you have them sorted by size: that will be there new alphabetical order

If you have them sorted by orientation: that will be there new alphabetical order

If you have them sorted by resolution: that will be there new alphabetical order

If you sort them manually: that will be there new alphabetical order

See where I'm going here?

And, for what it's worth, it doesn't make a difference if you rename them in Bridge or LRC, a renamed file is a renamed file.

You would have to recreate your manual sort order in Lightroom.

Thanks for that.  I confess that before starting this renaming I should have thought it through.  What I have done is to rename the files, copying to another folder. I have retained the original name but created a numerical prefix 1-xxx. They are then saved in the order in which they are renamed. Bit messy as they now have a prefix of 001 etc.

Any better solution I would welcome.

(Oddly, I would have hoped that to then sort by date (i.e. time would maintin the order, but it seems they are not renamed in sequence.)
