Two photos selected when only wanting one

When choosing photos I use the star method and then use sort by rating - there is always more than I want and I found out that two photos are selected when I only want one by default? Not sure how to pose the question but it seems like Bridge wants to show a comparison or something and I only want the one that I selected to be starred....any help will be very helpful!
