Question

Unable to use numbers to edit filenames

Windows 10, lots of everything...  Current version of Bridge.  I don't RECALL it doing anything this bizarre in the last version, certainly didn't in the version I used a month ago.

This HAS to be something incredibly dumb, 'cause there's NO WAY Adobe would actually make Bridge do this on purpose...

Standard workspace, thumbnails on right.  Filename is something like 180523_2325.jpg, and I need to change the filename to 1583 2325 goose.jpg...  Previously I clicked the filename, then clicked again (not too fast 'cause then it tries to open it in Photoshop) to highlight the whole name then clicked again to put the cursor in the filename so I can edit it.

NOW, I do the same thing, the cursor is in the same place, and I can use the numeric keypad on the RIGHT to change the numbers in the filename, but the numbers at the top of the keyboard don't change the filename, they cause a variety of bizarre behavior...

For example, third thumbnail in the row, cursor in the filename and I hit "8" in the numbers above the keyboard.  NOTHING happens UNTIL I hit return, then the FIRST thumbnail in the row (NOT the one I was in) gets a green label.  Switch to the fifth image in the row, click to highlight the name and press "4".  A PREVIOUS image gets 4 stars.

So FAR, this HASN'T happened with anything else on the PC.  Lightroom still works fine, Photoshop (other than the screwed up cropping and crashing a lot more frequently) seems to largely work.  As does every other program I use from Word to Helicon, so I don't think my keyboard has lost it's mind.  I can't imagine this behavior is deliberate, but if it IS, can someone tell me how to shut this *&^%$ off so the PC goes back to acting like a PC rather than whatever Adobe is trying to make it act like?

This is not a fix to the real bug or magic fix. The bug is Adobe changed the way keyboard entry works and broke the ability to enter numbers into the rename area when Require the Control Key to Apply Labels and Ratings is unchecked.

Never in the last 10 years has unchecking the "Require the Control Key..." impacting typing numbers into the rename filename area. This is a bug that creates a terrible change in user experience. Please fix the problem, not workarounds that are sub-optimal.

I"m pretty sure that's what I said in the original post.  Followed by vehement denials that anything has changed.  It has.  I suspect Adobe couldn't care less.  They'll say it's a "feature" like they do with most pain in the <> changes that make products less productive.  It's just another of those niggling PITA things that make Bridge less useful.

And use F2 for rename. It's much easier than trying to use the mouse.

Thanks for your thoughts, but no.

Standard behavior for the last umpteen years is that I DON'T need to hit the control key every time, and I don't WANT to have to hit the control key every time.  I want the normal behavior back.

Same for F2.  It doesn't SOLVE anything, it just highlights the filename.  I STILL can't edit the filename using the number keys on the keyboard.

I also had a friend who no longer uses Bridge, but has the current version installed, do the same thing I did.  She got the same unacceptable behavior and earned me a "Yeesh, you've got to be kidding.  What idiot thought THIS was a good idea.  Yet another reason not to use Bridge."  But, as she uses Bridge as little as possible these days, there's not much less she can use it.

So, same question as original.  HOW do I get Bridge to provide the standard, normal keyboard behavior it's had for the last 10+ years?  I don't care if it works exactly the same on every dumbed-down device in the known universe, I'd like it to work optimally on the PC I'm using and don't care of some cell phone or wristwatch or whatever is different.

You'll have to make the change as noted above by Abhishek Seth. That is what controls number key behavior. There is no other way to fix it.

And hitting F2 means you don't have to click and wait to edit the filename.

Just for giggles, I put Bridge 8.1 back on.  It does NOT exhibit this bizarre behavior...  Please tell me 8.1 ISN'T the last version of Bridge that'll be usable on an actual computer.

    Hi DavePinMinn,

Please launch Bridge CC 2019-> Preferences -> Labels and turn on the preference "Require the Control Key to Apply Labels and Ratings"
