Why is Bridge CS6 failing to store keywords in some of my images?

I have been using Adobe Bridge CS6 for many years to tag my Canon CR2 raw files and also, more recently, some Panasonic Lumix RW2 raw files. I have tagged tens of thousands of images without any problem, but after processing a batch of 878 holiday images over the past few days I have noticed that a small number of them are not retaining any of the keywords. I have tried many times without any effect. Rather oddly, it is not always the same images that are affected. However, I always appear to have a total of 26 images that fail to retain keywords after exiting Bridge. This suggests to me that I might be hitting some limit in the system.

In case it is relevant, I am running the latest version of Windows 10 on my PC and the Bridge CS6 version is 5.0.2.4 x64. The bridge cache is 8.95GB in size and contains 58,857 files.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

David

Edited: To clarify that the 26 affected images are not always the same.

    Problem solved!

I use Breeze Systems Downloader Pro to transfer images to my PC and this software is configured to rename each image in a standard manner that works well with my Canon camera. I used exactly the same process to import images from my wife's new Panasonic Lumix without thinking it through in enough detail. The bottom line is that I have a number of images that share the same filename prior to the extension.

A pair of images with names like Pic123.CR2 and Pic123.RW2 will each generate an XMP file called Pic123.XMP. As soon as I updated the keywords for Pic123.CR2, it would thus overwrite any previously stored metadata for Pic123.RW2, and vice versa.

It's obviously time for me to reconsider my file renaming scheme for non CR2 files...
