xmp files are no longer being created or saved

since the last upgrade of Bridge, xmp files are no longer appearing (or being saved?) when I upload files from a camera card and into Bridge. Is there a setting that I need to change?

There are two possibilities for this: Are you converting to DNG format? In that case, the DNG is a container format and the xmp files are contained within the DNG.

Alternatively, unless you DO something to the image (wihtin ACR), there is no XMP file created because nothing has been done yet.
