Published .exe file - Captivate 5

We recently upgraded from Captivate 3to Captivate 5, with Captivate 3 we published all of our projects as .exe files and never experienced a problem.  However, I just created a project in Captivate 5, published it as a .exe file (tried with both Flash Player 9 and Flash Player 10) and users cannot access the file.  Those of us that have the Captivate 5 application installed on our PCs can open the .exe file without a problem.  However, the users that do not have the Captivate 5 application cannot open it.  All of us have Flash Player 10 installed, therefore, I don't believe it's a problem with the Flash Player.  The error message that they are getting states, "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.  Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

My project information is as follows:

Resolution:  800x600

Slides:  13

Slides with audio:  0

Audio quality:  MP3, 96 kbps, 44.100 KHz

eLearning output:  Acrobat.com

Display score:  Yes

Enable Accessibility:  Yes

Skin:  City Night

Flash(SWF) size and quality:  Custom

ActionScript Version:  AS3

I also published it as an .swf file (with html) and they cannot open the .swf (I believe because they don't have a swiff point player), but could open the .html.  However, the .html doesn't work properly with posting quiz results to acrobat.com.

Your help is greatly appreciated, at this point, it's preventing us from using Captivate 5 for anything.

Nikki

Hello - I filed a bug report with Adobe and this was their response:

    First they said that:

    ---------

For Windows, this issue has been resolved and we have a Blog Post for this. Please go through http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2010/08/unable-to-open-exe-files-published-from-adobe-captivate-5.html and let us know if it works for you.

    ---------

    and then

    ------------

There can be two issues that one can face with Win32 flash exe:

    1) Captivate 5 generated exes face a problem with missing Visual Studio 2008 SP1 redistributables. If this happens, the exe will not launch at all. This issue was fixed with the new FakeFlash.exe that you found in the forum mail.

    2) If some older version of flash player is present in system (say flash6, 7, etc.), then captivate does not re-install newer version of flash player (flash10) bundled along with the exe. When you get blinking/flashing, it indicates this issue. You can check C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash folder on your machine to see whether some Flash*.ocx exists there.

    ------------

I was testing my Captivate application on a brand new install of the very first version XP on an older machine with no software installed. The only thing I found that worked completely was installing the latest Flash Player - it worked great after that (see my previous post about steps I went through). My plan is to include the Flash Player installers in a troubleshooting folder on the DVD. I'm not sure what else to do.

Hi all...experiencing the exact same problem: trying to publish a course, authored in Captivate 5/Mac and need to create .EXE file/CD-ROM for PC.

Unpon insertion of the CD-ROM into the PC/Win XP, am getting the "...application configuration is incorrect."

I then followed the above link to the "patch", where I read this:

"Download and install the latest patch for this issue, publish the project as an EXE file again, and then try opening it.

If you are Publishing to Windows EXE from Mac version of Adobe Captivate, install this patch in Mac as well."

Am now wasting time in this forum just like you, dear reader - and trying desperately, not to get sarcastic.

Apparently the patch itself, is an .exe file?   I'm going to assume positive intent on the part of Adobe and ask how,

as a Mac user who paid Large American Dollars for Captivate 5/Mac, exactly how I am intended to utilize this patch?

Am on deadline, I await your kind reply containing a solution to how one might publish successfully, a CD-ROM for PC using Captivate 5/Mac. Cheers...

    Hello there,

The same FakeFlash.exe available in FakeFlash.zip works for Mac too. You need to replace that FakeFlash.exe in \applications\Adobe Captivate 5\ExecutablePublish . Post that, publish any content to EXE and check it on windows machines and it should work. Please let me know if it doesn't,

    Thanks,

I've been having the same issue - using Captivate 5 to create a .exe file that will be distributed as a stand-alone application. The target audience includes people who may be (highly likely) still using XP on 32bit machines without Flash Player installed.  I ran into the same trouble that everyone else here has. I tried all of the following, each time being careful to reboot the Windows machine:

Tried both Flash 9 and Flash 10 exports to .exe

Tried installing the vcredist_x86.exe file as suggested.

Followed these instructions for replacing the FakeFlash.exe file and regenerated the .exe file:

    http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2010/08/unable-to-open-exe-files-published-from-adobe-captivate-5.html

None of these worked in any combination.  Finally, after doing all this I tried installing the Flash Player and it worked just fine.  However, now I will have to retrace my steps to see if installing the vcredist_x86 file is really necessary.

    Hope this issue fixed soon!

    Welcome to our community

Interesting you found that installing the Flash Player made things work. I say this because that's really one of the advertised benefits of the EXE format. It is supposed to allow your Captivate movie to be viewed without any trace of the Flash Player installed.

Please do take a moment and file a Bug report to Adobe and report your findings. Link for doing that is in my sig line.

    Cheers... Rick

    Good day everyone,

A bug has been reported to the Captivate engineering team and they are working hard to come up with a solution.

As soon as a solution is provided, I will update this thread.

We apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you.

    Hi David,

I don't understand why Adobe Technical support is still working on a solution .... when one has already been developed and WORKED !!! Unless other people are having a slightly different problem with publisheding as .exe file ??

Here is the details of the bug I reported on 16th August 2010:

Feature Request/Bug Report : Bug Report

    Product                    : Captivate

    Product Version            : version 5

    Browser                    : Microsoft Internet Explorer

    Web Server                 :

    Application Server         :

    Database                   :

    Operating System           : Windows XP

    OS version                 : 5.1 SP3

    HTTPREFERRER               : https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&product=5

    Feedback Report            : ******BUG******

Captivate 5 Projects published as .exe will not run on Learners computers where Captivate 5 has NOT been installed. When they try to run the .exe file the following message is received: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem". Learners computers are running on Windows XP

    Steps to reproduce bug:

    1. Start Captivate 5

    2. Create project from project template. Note project template was created in Captivate 5

    3. Project created contains 5 slides, 4 slides are recording slides

    4. Save project

    5. publish project as Windows .exe  6. .exe files runs on computer with Captivate installed

    7. send file to learner (with no Captivate installed) and when the try to run it, the error message appears

Results: error message received: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem"

Expected results: .exe file should run eLearning program created with Captivate 5

Here is the solution (minus the attached file since I can't add files to this forum) I received on 16th August:

We really appreciate you reporting this issue. The issue has been addressed and I am attaching the fix with this email.

Please follow the below steps -

    1. Rename the attached 'FakeFlash.txt' file to 'FakeFlash.Exe'.

    2. Go to "<Adobe Captivate 5 Installation Folder>/ExecutablePublish"

    3. Take a backup of 'FakeFlash.Exe' file.

    4. Replace the 'FakeFlash.Exe' with the one renamed in step 1

    5. Launch Captivate, Open the Project, and publish it to Exe

Let us know if it solved your problem.

    Thanks

    Ravi

I suggest Adobe Technical Support talk to their colleague, Ravi, for the solution instead of re-developing it. And post it on the Adobe site so everyone has access to it.

As much as I enjoy particatpating & helping the Captivate community ... I'm sorry I just can not act as you distributor of bug fixes because Adobe can't get their act straight on this MAJOR problem.

Submitted a bug report on the 23rd. The support case was withdrawn by Adobe with the following (canned in part, since they neglected to add the product and version) message:

    "Monday, August 23, 2010 2:30:35 PM PDT

Thank you for contacting Adobe Technical support. I am responding in
reference to your query on the support portal regarding (State the
    product with the version)

I would like to inform you that your product is working fine as you are
able to create .exe file from project but unable to run on the another
machine and this issue involves different softwares coding also hence
this issue is not supported by Adobe Technical support as per Adobe
EULA. We are withdrawing this case as issue is out of support

For a resolution to this issue, you can also navigate to our self help
resources such as our knowledge base & User to User forums by
    clicking on the following links:
    KnowledgeBase - http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm
    U2U Forums - www.forums.adobe.com

    Have a nice day.

    Regards,
    Adobe Technical Support"

So good luck to you all.

I have opened another case, though, so we'll see.

    Argh!

    August 24, 2010

The support case I referred to above came after I actually called Tech Support. I referred the guy to this forum thread and he told me that he didn't know anything about it and that I should contact Carol to ask her to send me the file. So I asked him if that was Adobe's official position: that I should contact a customer who had received a file from Adobe and ask her to send it on to me to solve my support issue. He responded I could either do that or escalate the case, but he couldn't escalate the case if I could not provide a support agreement number. Since my IT dept does not share such things with me I could not provide the number. Still, if it's a known bug -- and it is a regression, since I had no problem with Captivate 4 -- should they really be charging me for sending me a bugfix?

Argh!  Outsourcing your tech support is never a good idea.

    August 24, 2010

I submitted a bug report on the 18th. No word yet. No txt/exe file yet.

    August 18, 2010

I also sent in a bug report so we will see how that goes. For our company not being able to deliver captivate .exe files is a deal breaker. You would think Adobe would address this on a broader scale and not make each person submit a bug report for a solution. Seems like throwing a wish into the wind. Does anyone have further information on a permanent solution. Is the solution going to be in a future upgrade and when?

    August 18, 2010

    Hi Scott,

I understand the frustration as I was just there! However I did submit a bug report and was e-mailed from adobe to expect a fix for it. I did recieve it, and replaced the offending file. I re published and the output works fine. Although I just exported as a exe file for my purposes. I am not sure if it works for all of the output choices. I am hoping so! So please be patient, only took a day or so.

    Fix is available from Adobe.

I had the same error message received by Users trying to run the published exe file from a new project created in Captivate 5. Operating system being used was Windows XP.

I created a Bug report with Adobe and in a very short time I received via email a replacement 'FakeFlash.exe' file which is stored in AdobeCaptivate 5 installation folder / ExecutablePublish. After copying the new file to the directory, I republished the project as exe and users no longer had a problem running the file. My suggestion would be to contact Adobe via Bug Report for the 'fix'

Where can I report the bug and why Adobe don't set this file on the internet?

I don't know why Adobe hasn't posted the 'fix' on the Internet, maybe they are still testing it ?? But it worked for me.

On the right side of the Forum window you should see "Useful Links", under that is "Feature Request / Bug Report", follow that link to report the bug

I too am having the same error message. Any luck with a patch or fix?

In the work environment it is sometimes difficult to get authorization to download the work around you propose. I may go back to captivate 4, unfortunetly I have created my work in captivate 5 and I do not think its backwards compatible. This is horribly inconvient.

This error kind of defeats the purpose of creating training to be shared if it can not run on any other machine other than the one the training was originally created on. This is a fundemental flaw. Help Adobe Help!

    Hi Colin

Please consider submitting a bug report to Adobe. The more reports they see, the more likely it is to see a fix.

    Link is in my sig.

We are new to Captivate 5 and are having trouble delivering .exe

files also. They deliver fine on machines with Captivate 5 but not on other

Windows xp. We get the same error ....configuration is incorrect. The option to install C++ redistributable is not an option as we need to deliver to hundreds of outside folks. Has anyone found a way to deliver the .exe Captivate published files to a wide base of users? Is Adobe aware of this and working on it or are we doing something wrong?  Scott
