Adding Animation to Real Life video

Can anyone suggest a good work flow or tutorial for adding animation to a video of real life objects? Specifically adding cartoon faces to things like apples, sock puppets or toys. Was thinking just animate the face in Character Animator and using somethignliek After Effects to track the object I am putting the face on.

Any other ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!
