Character Animator won't playback

All of a sudden CA won't playback. Instead I get the message 'Use the record workspace to record or play'. It's doing it on all scenes, even ones that worked before. I checked the audio. I refreshed the scene. I quit and restarted twice. But still it won't play. I did a compute lip sync from audio just before this began. Any thoughts? Thanks.
