Question

cutting puppet timeline

I want to record my puppet and then rig it completely differently and record again but I need to cut the puppet timeline so the new rig doesn't record over entire timeline. I want two separate takes of same puppet with different rigs. I want to be able to splice the puppet timeline or do I add a new copy of puppet in timeline?

The rigging is part of the puppet. Not exactly sure why you want to change the rigging, but assuming that is correct... it sounds like you want to have two puppets that share the same artwork (same looking character, but different rigging set up). I do that quite often - make a character for a special purpose to avoid the one puppet getting too complex.

If that seems reasonable, then it would be two separate puppets in the timeline that get recorded. You can trim puppets in the timeline (or just takes/recordings of puppets) so one puppet disappears at exactly the same time as the other puppet appears - it would be up to you to line up the positions of the two puppets to make a smooth transition.

Or if you explain a bit more why you want different rigging there may be a different solution where you can reuse the one puppet.

When you start recording, it will record from the current playhead position - so you can set the exact point recording starts. Also CH creates a new recording that sits above the old recording - the old one is not deleted. This allows you to slide the recordings around sideways, plus trim the left and right edges, to get the timing etc right. So even if you do accidentally record over the top of an existing recording, its pretty easy to just delete the new take (the new recording) and the old one will still be there.

I want to do it because my puppet pulls a funny face in the last frames where in the rig all the parts of face are transformed to look like a mess. I had already recorded the first part with normal face of puppet talking and when I got to end of timeline I switched back to rig mode to make transformations but returning to record mode it wiped out my puppets former recorded rig to the latest transformed one. I didn't save the project in transformed rig so I had to record again in normal puppet mode , export then start again recording and exporting the end transform. It was so annoying to have to do.

Ahhh. So, it is important to realize that ch records your actions, not the puppet artwork. It remembers you dragged here, moved there, adjusted the mouth to this viseme, etc. If you change a puppet rigging, then replay the scene, it will replay the actions on the new version of the puppet.

To do what you mention there are two approaches. Export a video file before changing the rigging. Then use say premier pro to join the video clips afterwards. Or, create a new puppet. If you duplicate the puppet inside ch in the project panel, it will use the same artwork, but you can mess around with the rigging without affecting the first one. Then you can remove the first puppet from the scene and add the second one, or copy and paste the takes into a new track in the timeline panel etc.

But it sounds like the real solution is to fix the puppet so it correctly works throughout the one track so you don't have to resort to these gymnastics. It can be tricky to get right, but usually it can be achieved.
