Entire project and files and puppets have disappeared

I started having alerts pop up about the external editor not updating (Photoshop) and the one puppet I was working on turned into a giant version of color bars,  so I quit the Character Animator, relaunched it and all of the files, puppets, scenes were gone. I've looked everywhere on my computer and when I open that particular project it's entirely empty. A lot of work gone. What happened?
