Lost access to versions & history

I made several versions of a project a few days ago. They, along with the history, are now gone. Maybe due to upgrade to 23.1 in between? I searched the disk for .chproj files, and other ones showed up but not previous versions of this one.

Thanks, CoSA. You headed me in the right direction. I did not remember that the folder and the .chprog file are strongly connected, and I moved the file.

Its is almost impossible to lose history. The entire history from the start of the project is saved in the project. The history is only cleared if you Save As a new project or manually choose to clear the history. Opening a project from an old version also clears history, though old saved versions in the history panel will still be available.

It may appear that you have lost work if you go back using the history panel and then start doing more changes (which clears the redo list) and haven't saved version manually before that. But actually the old state is still reachable via the history panel — try enabling this option in the hamburger menu:

Also note that switching to a saved version restores that state and also the redo list — so in some cases you'll need to click on a "future" redoable item at the bottom of the history panel after switching.

I made several versions of a project

Do you mean you hit cmd-S? If so, those versions should also be in the History panel (named Version # if you didn't rename them).

If none of these things work, you can quit Ch, zip up the entire project directory, and send a DM with a link to the file (e.g. using wetransfer.com) for us to look at.

There seems to be 3 different ways that CC products handle backups and history. AI gives a file location in Preferences, AE saves at predetermined times set by you in Preferences as well as Increment and Save, but CA has nothing relevant in Preferences and puts Saved Versions in the History panel but on occasion looses them. This is the results of my on search for an answer when maybe I should simply spend several hours redoing what was lost. <sigh>

Any suggestions on how to find the lost files?
