Pull Down Menus Not Holding When Clicked

After working in Character Animator for awhile the top pull down menus won't stay down when I click on them. They flash open and close and will only stay open if I hold down the left mouse button while clicking. This might be tied to a problem I have when editing my puppet in Illustrator: it won't allow me to create subfolders (the button is grayed out).
