Question

Why does Characterizer crash my camera?

I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000.  The drivers are installed and up to date.  After setting up the facial captures in CA Characterizer, the camera stops working when going back to Animator.  The audio levels function, but not the camera.  While this occurs, when I open the Logitech software to perform a capture using that software, the camera is not recognized.  I have to reboot the pc, then unplug and plug in the Pro 9000 cable in order for the camera to again function properly.  Any answers?

That sounds pretty severe!!!  If the camera continues to not work after the software exits, that starts sounding like a problem with a device driver or similar. If Character Animator is no longer running, I would not have expected it to have any effect on the camera afterwards. (I am not however an expert Windows developer!!). If you have to both reboot the PC and replug the camera that is pretty strange (or maybe you mean one or the other is required).

A suggestion is to define an exact sequence of actions you take - I was not sure what “after setting up the facial captures” meant exactly. What was the exact menu items or similar you did. Having a repeatable sequence can help a lot in tracking down problems.

One problem I am having on my laptop is if I put it to sleep, the camera does not work afterwards. However if I click the camera icon under the webcam video to turn off the camera, then click again to turn it back on that resets it for me. Might be worth a try. It sounds like a bug, but turning the camera off/on that way is certainly quicker than a full reboot!

It is strange other programs being affected - unless CH somehow has kept exclusive access to the device. Is CH still running? Or do you exit CH? I would have expected exiting CH to release the camera for other apps. If it continues to fail, then is when I start looking for device driver upgrades just in case its a problem with the camera rather than the software.
