Will this "Coat" layer cause problems since the mesh is picking it up?

Beginner, so not sure if I worded it correctly. here are the attached pictures:

My character has a lab coat as a part of his costume, but I see that the mesh is picking it up as part of its outline. Would this be an issue, especially since I don't see myself using the coat very often?

And whenever I select left or right hand (or legs, for that matter), the mesh outline doesn't seem to change. Any suggestions on fixing these issues would be much appreciated. thank you!

The outline does not change because none of the layers are tagged as independent. When you check the box for the crown (independent) then the shape outline will change. They will need to be independent if you want them to move separately from everything else. Your puppet look great! The problem with something like a coat is that it is a layer on top of the arms, body, etc. It will not move with the arm that is underneath it. Other more experienced folks here probably now how to illustrate and rig it to get the right look. I am still figuring it out. If you haven't watched the tutorials you may learn something there that will help. I found them to be super helpful. Also, I made myself a cheat sheet of things I learn that I keep next to me for reference beause there is a lot to know to master this!

David you are a genius. Thank you!! It always seems to be such a simple thing.

Yeah, I'll probably have to get rid of the coat until I gain more experience with using the software in general. If anyone is reading this and has ideas, please let me know.
