Workflow for multiple characters with similar layers and rigs

Hey everyone, I am in the process of creating a show with multiple similar characters, mostly kids. I have been working on setting up the layers and rig for the Main character's puppet, and was wondering on what is the most efficient way to create other characters without having to create everything from scratch. Any thoughts?
