Because you agreed to a 12 month subscription.  Cancelling early incurs a 50% termination fee.

To avoid fees, wait until your 12th month of service to cancel.  Your expiration date can be found in your online Adobe Account.   Set a reminder on your smartphone or Google calendar.

It's not charging for cancel, but it's an early cancellation fee. With your annual subscription, you promised to pay Adobe for their software for a full year. Adobe made certain commitments for that periode in terms of invest into personal and infrastructure. As you promised a full year, and not a month to month, Adobe made you a special price. Month to month subscriptions are more expensive, but are cancellable any time without a fee.

If you do not use the software, it is better to pay the early termination fee, than the full price until the end of the subscription.

When you cancel a subscription before the end of the subscription term, you are charged 1/2 the remaining total that you would have paid. For example, if you cancel 6 months before the end of the subscription, you will pay a cancellation fee equal to 3 months of fees.

This information is in the Adobe Subscription and Cancellation Terms that you agreed to when you first bought a subscription.

most leases (that i know of), don't even let you cancel.  you're still on the hook to pay until the end of the lease.
