Creative Cloud App not functional

The Creative Cloud app icon disappeared from my Mac menu bar. I went into my Finder and clicked on the CC app, and what came up was what you see in the screenshot below. The app appears to be grayed out and it will not accept any input.  As I hover over items, the cursor never changes from the pointer arrow. The only thing I can do in the app is maximize or minimize the window, or to quit the app.

Earlier today I noticed, while I did not have any Adobe apps open, that one of those pop-ups (like happens when you use the CC app to update) came up and prompted for my user PW -- but only one pop-up appeared, and when I update apps from CC there are usually 2 of them (Adobe Cloud Services, and something else I can't remember the name of).

What is going on?

forget it.  I missed the X to close that feature preview, due to dark color scheme during night mode. very hard to seen.
