Missing original files

Please help. I somehow have lost the original files for one of my catalogs and only seem to have the previews. I have googled and tried everything I can think of to find but have had no luck. When I was away I ran out of card space and rang my son to check on the PC those photos were there before I formatted the card. UGH!! I think they are gone. How does this happen and is there anything I can do? Thanks

Which Adobe application are you using? Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and Photoshop Elements all use a catalog. We can move your post to the proper forum for you.

I have already googled and tried everything suggested. I guess I was hoping for a checklist of sorts to confirm that I have tried everything and that they are truly gone.

I can see the previews. I can see they are missing files. I have clicked the exclamation mark that shows the previous location but then it says go to its current location. If I knew that, they wouldn't be missing.

I've tried find my missing folder. Nothing

There don't appear to be any deleted folder or photos.

I've searched my entire PC for some of the image's file names. Nothing.

I use an external hard drive and did notice that it is listed twice. One as a separate E drive and one under My PC. I wondered if that had something to do with it but not sure where to go from there.
