Unable to fill polygons with patterns/hatchs

HI

I'm having trouble selecting a hatch fill. When I select a hatch, it fills the lines of the polygon. I've noticed when I click on a polygpn, the ouline appears as two 'tramlines'. I have no idea how to fix this. Thanks for any suggestion.
