Question

bookmarks.json file in recent files list in Creative Cloud

Hello,

I’m using an Acrobat Pro DC plan and I’ve noticed something weird in Creative Cloud.

I do not use Adobe cloud storage services at all, but when I go to the main page of the Creative Cloud Desktop app, I see two strange files in the recent files list.

These are JSON files. One is called “bookmarks.json” and the other has a similar name: “collab-bookmarks.json”. I do not know what these files are.

These files do not appear in my Creative Cloud files list (which is empty, as I said, because I do not use cloud storage) or in the shared files list, only in the recent files list.

They are tiny (16 bytes each). The creation and modification dates for both files are December 2022, but I had never noticed them.

When I click on the three dots for either file, I have no options (such as rename, open in browser, or even delete) except “Open”.

I’ve checked my Adobe account, and there were no suspicious logins or sessions.

I uploaded an old PDF file to Creative Cloud storage for testing purposes and concluded that a file’s creation date is its upload date to the cloud. This means that the two mysterious files were uploaded in 2022.

Does anyone have any idea about this strange situation?

    Alright, thank you.

I was effectively thinking theses were Adobe’s internal files. Any idea why they appear in the recent files list though ? Is it just bug ?

    Thanks for checking back, @quirky_judgedb0d.

I completely understand wanting to know why unfamiliar files are appearing in Creative Cloud, particularly when you didn’t create or upload them yourself.

Rather than assuming this is a bug, I’d like to narrow down where the files are actually coming from. What happens if you select Open for bookmarks.json or collab-bookmarks.json? If you’re able to identify where either file is stored locally, please share the file path, removing your username or any other personal information first.

Knowing the file location should give us a better clue about what created the files and why they’re appearing under Recent.

@kanikas28368183 and I look forward to your update, @quirky_judgedb0d.

    Hello,
From the Creative Cloud desktop app, in the recent files list, I selected open for both files.
    Nothing seems to happen.

By clicking on the files, the mention “ Online only “ (or Cloud only, I don’t know the exact translation used, my app is not in english) appears. It doesn’t seem to be stored locally, but I can’t find the files in online storage either.

    Hi quirky_judgedb0d,

These files appear to be related to Adobe's internal synchronization or collaboration functionality rather than files you intentionally uploaded to Creative Cloud. The fact that they appear under Recent but not in your Creative Cloud files or shared files also suggests that they are metadata/system files rather than normal cloud documents.

I also wouldn't use the December 2022 creation date as evidence that someone uploaded these files to your account at that time, since internal application files may retain timestamps from when they were created or processed by an Adobe component. Since you've already checked your Adobe account and haven't found any unfamiliar sessions or logins, there doesn't appear to be an obvious indication of unauthorized account access based on these two files alone.

Let us know if you have any other questions around the same.

    Thanks
    ^KS
