Creative Cloud Desktop preventing PC from going to sleep

I recently started to have the problem where Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop prevents my Computer from entering sleep mode. Normally my screen turns off after 5 minutes and the PC will go to sleep after 20 minutes, but CC recently started to prevent this.

I have confirmed that CC Desktop is the culprit by using the following command:

powercfg -requests

which outputs the following:

DISPLAY:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume5\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Creative Cloud\ACC\Creative Cloud.exe
Video Wake Lock

SYSTEM:
None.

AWAYMODE:
None.

AUSFÜHRUNG:
None.

PERFBOOST:
None.

ACTIVELOCKSCREEN:
None.

When I kill the Creative Cloud procress, my computer is able to go to sleep again.

Why does this occurr and how can I fix this?

Diagnostic info:

Windows 11 Home 21H2 (Build 22000.795) x64

Creative Cloud Desktop (5.8.0.592):

  • Applications: 5.8.0.592
  • CCX process: 4.10.0.39
  • CC library: 3.20.5.20

@10502402 adobe cc is the key part of the problem. we've all known that since the op posted their powercfg -request command results more than 1 month ago.

but it's just as obvious that it's not causing the problem in a vaccuum: there's something(s) cc is interacting with on the problematic computers that's causing the problem.  what that is, i don't know.

i know this problem has been noted for years, but this thread has more activity (ie, users with problems) than any previous computer sleep-problem thread i've seen.

anyway, it's not possible for me to vet possible solutions, because i do not have this problem.  but i did run across something that looks promising from greg carmack, a windows (i know, some mac users have this problem, too) expert.

Hi Tasha. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Turn off Adobe at startup following Step 4 in this checklist: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for.... It doesn't need to be running when your PC starts, just when you open it to use it.

If that doesn't do it then here is everything that works best for fixing sleep which I've been helping troubleshoot successfully for over a decade:

1) The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. It controls everything about Suspend, Sleep and Hibernate. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here:
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

2) Next troubleshoot Sleep working properly:

https://thegeekpage.com/fix-windows-10-sleep-mo...
https://www.technipages.com/windows-10-wont-sleep

https://lifehacker.com/how-to-fix-the-latest-wi...

What I do is set Power Plan timeouts to 1 minute for Display and Sleep, then 2 minutes for Hibernate. After each step in the tutorials above, restart PC and sit back to observe if the timeouts work. If so set them back to Plan defaults:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/43774-reset...

If Sleep cannot be fixed for now and Hibernate will work then I'd use it because it's an even better power saver, saves your work to Hiberfile, powers off PC completely, loads the hiberfile when you power back on so it starts faster.

Thanks for the reply with the MVP information. I used this command line (mentioned by others here) via CMD and fixed it on one of my computers:

powercfg /requestsoverride process "creative cloud.exe" display system

Again, I only did this on one computer. The other computer was left as-is out of curiosity. I finally decided to see what might be causing the video wake lock from Creative Cloud. As it happens, I didn't find the root cause, but I *did* nail down that the fix for this issue doesn't require typing anything on a command line, at least not for me.

What I did was open Creative Cloud from the Windows tray area. Once open, I clicked each of the icons at the top-right corner of the CC window, just like this:

And just like magic, I went from this:

C:\Users\justme>powercfg /requests
DISPLAY:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Creative Cloud\ACC\Creative Cloud.exe
Video Wake Lock

To this:

C:\Users\justme>powercfg /requests
DISPLAY:
None.

I literally fixed the problem by clicking four icons in Creative Cloud. I didn't restart anything, didn't reinstall anything, didn't adjust anything and somehow fixed the problem in just seconds.

Unofficial workaround for Adobe Creative Cloud video wake lock bug

1. Open Creative Cloud by double-clicking the icon in your Windows tray.

2. When the CC window opens, click these icons in sequence:

  • Fonts
  • Notifications
  • Cloud activity
  • Account

3. Close the CC window.

In case anyone is curious, my fonts window had no messages, I had no notifications in the notification window, my cloud storage showed "File Syncing / Up to date" and the account tab showed that I was logged in. I closed the CC window a few minutes ago and no video wake lock request has been made (yet).

I have the same issue but it's not Creative Cloud, it is only Adobe Illustrator. Whenever Illustrator is running, the screen will not switch off. I don't use sleep mode, I only let the screen turn off if there is no activity on the PC, but Adobe Illustrator stops this from happening, even if no document is open in Illustrator and it is minimized.

I know this is an old thread, but I have narrowed down the exact process causing it. I had this problem for a long time and it was very annoying. I just recently did a fresh install of Windows and sleep worked. Then after installing everything, the problem returned, so that told me it was something that got installed. Clearly after trial and error, I found adobe at fault. I noticed that before I logged into windows, sleep worked fine, so it was something starting after logging into windows. Lots more trial and error and I found the start up process "updaterstartuputility.exe" causing it. Disabling it from starting, solved the problem. Not sure what it is used for, but it is the root problem causer. I want to try the solution here to see if that works so I can allow the that process to run, but just thought I would point this out.

I was on windows 10, now 11, and it happened on both.

Just FYI. It's been a few days, since Adobe made some update to CC (which, by the way, does not show in my update history).

That seems to have done the trick, wrt preventing sleep.

I'm on an M1Max Mac.

I just discovered the same thing on two of my M1 computers. The update does not show up anywhere, but it appears the problem has gone away. For now.

@LenL, what's your cc app version number?

Add me to the list of users that is experiencing this problem as well.  In my case, it prevents my computer from going to password locked screen saver, which is a critical security issue in my environment.  I am following the suggestions and workarounds that have been posted.

Clicking the 4 CC icons worked.  In fact, all I needed to do was click the profile icon and it cleared the Wake Lock. It wasn't necessary for me to click all 4 icons.

Preventing CC from starting during Windows startup worked,

I will test out powercfg /requestsoverride process "creative cloud.exe" display system however it sounds like this needs to be run after any update or added to a regularly recurring task.

Following this thread.

good to hear that users found their own non-permanent solutions, shared them and they work (for at least some) others.

I have exactly the same issue on my MacBook Pro (M1Max).

There was a recent Apple update, but I think that CC also updated recently.

It's definitely CC, causing the problem.

Yes it's a coding problem on Adobe's side ... many reports of the issue and yet NO fixes from Adobe.  See here.  My solution to to stop CC from loading.

@Rob Ainscough,

what about @tsmith35x's fix.  does that work for you?

I have been experiencing this same problem recently - monitor refuses to sleep. I leave the PC on 24/7, it's polling data from a weather station. I have spent time researching this from the perspective of a Windows 10 issue. I have followed the advice on changing/making power plans to no avail. I have found and used the "powercfg /requests" command and have the same results as mentioned above. I've killed the CC process with the same results, as above.

i wonder if there's some software (in combination, or maybe not, with adobe cc) causing this issue, or a monitor driver issue.  i say this because i have the same os/adobe cc reported as problematic by a few users here

Edition Windows 10 Pro
Version 21H2
Installed on ‎8/‎9/‎2020
OS build 19044.1949
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4180.0

and

and i have no problem with my dell u4320q monitor sleeping.  and that's one thing i've not seen: reports of monitor type/model.

have you all tried updating your monitor driver and/or monitor firmware?

Absolutley Adobe's fault. Just did a fresh clean install of W11. Worked perfect before installing CC, now it's borked and I'm getting the same Video Wake Lock. Adobe, fix it.

I noticed the exact same thing started happening on the two CC installations that I have. Totally different systems, same Adobe CC versions, same issue with monitors not going into powersave. Note that neither of my systems are set to sleep or hibernate; both run 24/7 but the monitors no longer turn off.

powercfg /requests returns this:

DISPLAY:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume16\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Creative Cloud\ACC\Creative Cloud.exe
Video Wake Lock

  • Apps, Files, Discover, CC Installer all 5.8.0.592
  • Plugins 5.8.0.541
  • Libraries 1.0.5.5
  • CCX Process 4.11.1.1
  • CC Library 3.20.7.4

Whatever is causing this started very recently on both computers. Ran the normal DISM and SFC checks, but everything is just fine. Guessing the last CC update is the culprit.

I also had these windows 11 issues, which started about a week ago. For me, the fix was to clear a notification in Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop. Specifically, I had one of those "tooltips" on the Discovery tab. Once I clicked that and ran powercfg /requests, the command returned:

DISPLAY:
None.

Worked for me too, thanks for sharing. Leave it to Adobe to go out of there way to make sure your computer never sleeps in order to show you a stupid notification.

Same here.  Started very recently.  Adobe, please solve this.

these are user-to-user forums.  you can report bugs here, https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

p.s. you might want to try @MRMAdmin's solution.

Here's something that is working for me, for now. You can override the Adobe wake timers in Windows 10/11 using the following command from an elevated cmd prompt:

powercfg /requestsoverride process "creative cloud.exe" display system

Doing that will override the "video wake lock" placed by Adobe Creative Cloud. In my experience, that override is sometimes temporary and sometimes gets undone with windows updates, software udpates, etc. but is easy enough to re-do if needed. Give that a try.  Hopefully, regardless of the claimed "majority" not having the issue but us all knowing it clearly is an issue, Adobe will eventually fix it.

I'm facing the same issue here! Noticed it like 5-10 days ago on a Macbook Pro. I tried to reach support. They suggested I do a CC Clean, uninstall all software, and reinstall. I had to pause the file sync, but it only lasted for a day. Now even with file sync paused is preventing the screen saver appears. Checking on Activity Monitor, CC is the only one preventing it.

Used CC fine for the one year long on this MacBook. It just started this month.

August 16, 2022

I always (unplesantly) amused when Support from any company says "reinstall everything from the bare metal on up" -- because it's OBVIOUS that the problem is somewhere OTHER than the Company software. 🙂

I've just resigned myself to kill CC except when I am running Adobe software. Maybe they'll fix it some day.

This attitude with modern PC's astounds me. I spent 16 years of my corporate life maintaining small mainframe computers (Wang Australia). If a problem occured in the OS or with a program, we updated / replaced the faulty module, not the entire package. Nor did we uninstall / re-install software. Way too expensive to do so.
