Frozen Pen tool

Has anybody had any luck solving the frozen pen tool issue? I get about 15-20 anchor points into a selection and I end up stuck with a cursor and a non responsive program that doesn't allow any further actions to happen but also DOES NOT crash in the process. Very frustrating.
