programs losing their destination to save

I'm working on various files in Illustrator and Photoshop and repeatedly when I hit save, it has lost the ability to find the document. I want to save them to my dropbox folders, I don't need to use the cloud. I'm guessing that it is doing an auto-save to that? Not sure as I'm not finding the files in the cloud either. This just started happening within the last couple weeks
