Question

ACSM files cause Adobe Digital Editions to crash

So, I've been reading these forums trying to find an answer, but I haven't read about someone with the same problem. (If you know of a discussion where a solution was already posted, please link me if possible.) So, I decided to post this issue and see if anyone has some ideas about what to do.

I'm running OS 10.6.8 and the most recent Adobe Digital Editions. ADE can open/download some acsm files perfectly fine. However, for many, the application unexpectedly quits as soon as I try to open the acsm file. I know it's not the file, since I can send the file to someone else who uses the same computer and ADE version, and he can open the acsm just fine. I also know it's probably not ADE itself or my connection/firewall/etc., since I can open/download other acsm files perfectly fine. However, there seems to be a large number of acsm files that simply won't work for me and cause ADE to quit unexpectedly. Like I said, these same files work for someone else running the same version of ADE. Where should I look for the problem? These are not public library books. I do research at a graduate school, and these are ebooks that my school has paid for (the tech people there have been unable to help me). The person I sent the acsm files to test is not part of the institution, and yet he can still open the acsm files that I downloaded but can't open. So, I don't think it has to do with authorization either.

Does anyone have some trobleshooting suggestions beyond what I've just enumerated? Yes, I have uninstalled it and redownloaded it several times, along with essentially every other suggestion I've read on the forums, and still, many acsm files simply cause ADE to unexpectedly quit. If someone really wants, I can paste the entire error message that's given when it unexpectedly quits.

Thanks for any help.

4.03 for the Mac seems to have solved my crashing problems.  I downloaded an .acsm file from my library and it opened without any problems.

Same problem with Vancouver Public Library files. The first short story synced just fine, second (longer book) crashes the application every time I try to move it to my Kobo. I installed the older version and that didn't fix it. I'm OSX 10.7.5. Any help would be appreciated.

When I download an ACSM file from Kobo to ADE everything works fine and I can transfer it to my Kobo with no issues, so the problem appears to be related to Ontario Library Service ACSM files?

Having same prob as thread author. Running OS X 10.10.1 with latest ADE. Have successfully opened one book and can't get the other, both from the Vancouver Public Library.

I have the same problem as jjjnagy. Yosemite 10.10.1, ADR 4.0.2, Kobo Aura H2O. Downloading ACSM files from Ontario Library Service. ADE downloads the file and then crashes before completing the download but leaves an incomplete copy in the ADE bookshelf but it can't be opened or transferred without crashing. It can be removed.

Adobe Digital Editions for Mac Download ADE1.7.2

There is also one for windows here: Adobe Digital Editions Download

Books are opening!

I have a likewise problem with Digital Editions 4.0 on Mac OS 10.9.5: I can open/fullfill the acsm file I got from the library. I can authorize/deauthorize the device, browse it, read non-DRM PDFs already there... but whenever I try transfering the book, the application crashes. Although I noticed it *also* crashes when I plug-in the device (Kobo Glo) with the application open...

One possible reason, though I haven't seen your exact symptoms before.

~~~~~~~~~
There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1).  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.
The forum software is sometimes corrupting the link above.  There shouldn't be a blank in 'editio ns.html'.  The following redirects to the same page: http://tinyurl.com/diged172
Some people have found ADE trying to upgrade automatically.
It appears (not 100% sure) that if you install ADE2.0 as a new install (not as an upgrade) that your 1.7.2 will continue to run.
Probably best to say no if 2.0.x installation asks if you want to migrate your library.
Hi, thanks for your response. I saw that suggestion (possibly posted by you, or someone else?) and tried that, but it didn't seem to work at all. I'm going to try having someone look at the error message. That's for taking the time to respond!
