activation server error?

What do I do to be able to access an epub that I used to be able to access on my desktop computer? I did also sign in to be able to access the same document on my laptop, so perhaps that is the problem (having the document in more than one place)?  I was able to open the document in the past and now am told that there is an activation server error.  I don't have administrative rights on my computer, which is complicated.

Since I am having trouble on the desktop computer, I would like to have my highlighted notes from my desktop appear on my laptop as well -  is that possible?
