ADE crashing

Hello, I am using Adobe Digital Editions to read books for university. It works fine until I try to highlight a word or sentence, whether to copy it or use the highlight feature. Every time I try to highlight something, the entire application crashes. I was wondering if there is any way to fix this; if I uninstalled and then reinstalled the application, would my books still be there or would I have to re-download them? I do not want to risk losing the books.
