ADE error: check activation

i purchased an ebook online and used a different email address than I use for my adobe digital editions account. When I downloaded the book and went to open it on my pc (win 8.1 ADE 4.0) I got an error: check activation message and I can't open file. What do I need to do to open book on my pc in ADE 4.0?
