ADE loads 'phantom' books - how to fix?

I am using ADE version 4.5.3.162045 on a Windows 10 laptop.

Each time I launch ADE, even though I have previously returned and removed all books, it loads a bunch of previously borrowed and
downloaded books.

I again remove them, but they are loaded yet again when I next launch ADE. How can I fix this?
