ADE won't let me sign in: Activation Server error - code_E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY

ADE won't let me sign in with my Adobe ID. Adobe tech support is less than helpful on this, and has sent me here. The Activation Error is "code_E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY".
