ADE won`t recognize books on kobo

I just purchased MS Surface Pro 4 and downloaded ADE onto it.  Connected Kobo to Surface but ADE does not list books that I have on my Kobo library.  Should it not recognized all of the books I have on my Kobo already or will it recognize and store only new books that I add after the initial download of ADE?
