Adobe Digital Editions 4.03 no longer launches

The title says it all. When I start the program, it aborts the process after a few seconds. It will show up in the task manager for a while, but then it will just disappear.

The problem started today. Last night it was still working fine. I did not make any changes to the system. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing a few times, without any change. What can I do?

I am on a Windows 8 PC.
