Adobe Digital Editions 4.5x is useless as a reading app

I installed version 4.511 and tried to read a book.

None of the navigation controls work. I am stuck on the first page.

I can't use the mouse or keyboard or the menu items to advance through the book.

Adobe Customer Support is also useless here--they have no support, and they simply shunted me over here, where there is no support.
