Adobe Digital Editions deleted my notes and highlights

I just lost everything from all my work today. 

All highlights and most importantly - notes - from studying today has been lost once I reopened Digital Editions. 
When going into the "Navigation Panel" and then "Bookmarks" I can see old highlights and notes - but nothing from today (the scrolling function has also been off and it kept loading). 

So I have 3 questions: 

1. How can I get my notes and highlights back and prevent that from happening again?

2. How can I fix the sudden slow scrolling?

3. If those two questions cannot be answered: How can I move my notes and highligts over to another reader application?
