Adobe Digital Editions displays differently than ibook app

When I open a "fixed format" epub on Digital Editions, the proprietary fonts display as nonsense. When I open on my iPad wth the ibook app, it displays perfectly. This means that people without the app (like those who download Kobo epubs for reading on their computers) cannot use my book and I get complaints. 

  I am attaching a sample page from each to illustrate the problem.

   Also, the "search" function on fixed format books still does not work (after 9 years of complaints) on either the ibook or Digital Editions app. (It works fine on Kindle.)
