Adobe Digital Editions does not detect my kindle e-reader

ADE doesn't detect my kindle fire hd. I plug it in with the USB to my Microsoft and it shows up on my drive. But I open up ADE and it doesn't show up. I've tried to close it then reopen it and kept it open while plugging in the kindle. What do I do?
