Adobe Digital Editions does not recognize my eReader

When I connect my eReader (Kobo) to my computer via USB cable, Adobe Digital Editions does not recognize that a device is connected. The USB port and cable are both working. I have updated my Kobo to the latest software.

    I have just experienced the same with my Nook. When I downloaded a new library book A pop-up asked about access. As I have not experienced this before I said no. Now Digital Editions does not recognize my Nook. How do I grant access?
