adobe digital editions has stopped working

I downloaded a .acsm file so I downloaded adobe digital editions 3.0 to read it. When I open the file a dialog opens that says "Fulfilling [Item title]" and then the dialog and UI for ADE ices over and another dialog opens that tells me "Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 has stopped working". I downloaded 2.0 hoping for a more stable version and get the same error. I can view a free .acsm from adobe in ADE 2.0. Maybe an issue with viewing a purchased ebook? Any ideas?
