Adobe digital editions with spoken content on mac

ive encountered an issue of the last several days using ADE, i use the application to view my reading materials for university and use the spoken content feature on mac to read it out to me, ive done this for over a year with no issues and since all of a sudden it doesnt read it out loud. the spoken content feature still works on other applications however not on ADE. if there is anyone who has had a similar issue i would really appreciate any help.
