Adobe Ebooks on Sony PRS-500 - doesnt import to Sony

Hello,

Ive just purchased a Sony PRS-500 book reader that has adobe PDF compatibility.

After going to eBooks.com and buying a book, I can see the book fine on my
PC, but I cannot get it to import into the Sony CONNECT Reader which is
the method to load the book on to the PRS-500 device.

Ebooks points to this forum for support, and I hope Adobe doesnt point me back to eBooks. The Sony site just assumes PDF files work, and I got
wind of ebooks.com from a discount card that came with the Sony. So Im
assuming... that they should play nice together.

Anyone else out there using a Sony reader?

I have a PRS505 It claims to read epub books. It shows up as a bookshelf. I have imported a Project Gutenberg book through the downloads that come with the Adobe digital editions. However if I go to the project Gutenberg directly the book will transfer to the reader but when you try to open and read it refuses to do so. In Adobe digital editions it shows as book to long even though it is only 200 kB which is shorter than the one that does work.

    Any Ideas?

There is a Sony Reader limitation on the total chapter length, and the PG text are not the best done ePubs.  I would suggest that you go see if you can find the same text from www.feedbooks.com, as they do a much better job at generating ePubs (and PDFs, and....) from the public domain sources.

Since purchasing my Sony Reader PRS500 I have found alot of ways to convert ebooks to rtf or text to be downloaded into the CONNECT Reader

The only time I run into problems is if the book is in a secured format, but I keep plugging aways at different ebook sites and you will find it unsecured most the time to be able to change the formatting.

I perfer to use ABC Amber Converters, their so much easier to use and that is alot for me because I am so computer illiterate.

    Thanks for the posts Jerry.
BTW, Sony hasn't posted the firmware update yet, they tell us that it should be up shortly.

    Jerry,
Believe me, I feel your frustration - I would like to see our hard work out there for people to use. Unfortunately the decision of when and if to make any announcements about the availability of the firmware update for the Sony Reader will come from Sony and not from Adobe. Although, as I said before as soon as I get information that I can publicly disclose, I will post it here (unless management or marketing beats me to it).

    Mr. Lester
I have been following the Reader Market for the past few months, With the recent announcement of Books on Board selling ebooks in the epub format makes me hesitant to make a purchase. Not that I have not decided on a device but there has been no comment from Sony on where they stand with epub and Adobe DE support. I applaud Adobe for being the forerunner with this emerging market, It has been over a year since Mr. McCoy announced Adobe's intent on working with Sony to incorporate DE with the PRS line of Reader's. If Sony is unwilling to keep their loyal customer base informed some will take their business elsewhere, while others might be disappointed when no sooner than they purchase a current device, a new device is released compatible with the new formats yet backward compatibility falls by the wayside. I know technology is an ever evolving process and there will always be improvements in product lines, but I think overall the customers wants and needs should be paramount.

    Sincerely,

I recently purchased a Sony PRS500 but I didnt know at the time there was only a certain format you could use to download to my reader. Well the problem I am having is I download quite a few ebooks to my MS Reader Lit. Format, is there some way that I can convert this Lit. Format to my Sony PRS500. If yes, how do I go about doing it.

    Sean,
Please reread the messages from both me (#30, #23) and Stephen Cole, from eBooks.com, (#31) in this forum. They detail the supported options for getting content onto the Sony Reader. For instance if you buy books from fictionwise.com instead of buying then in Secure Microsoft Reader format, if you buy them instead in the "Multiformat" variety, then the PDF that you get will not be copy protected, and should work relatively fine (for cavaets read post #6).
