Question

Authorizing my nook

I have followed all the procedures for registering my nook with B&N and I also have downloaded ADE and established an Adobe ID the same as my nook's ID.  Everyplace I read I am suppose to be able to open ADE and then plug in my nook and ADE is suppose to recognize it and allow me to authorize it.  I have had no luck as ADE does not recognize my nook when I plug it into to the computer and I can't find any suggestions on how to correct this. Anybody have any ideas as to what I can do.

Thanks

tom

Blaarg! I had this problem a year and a half ago, when I first got the Nook when it first came out. Went through all of this with B&N, the library tech guy, my brilliant husband and finally got it figured out (with NO help from Adobe, thank you very little). Had been working fabulously since then; all the little icons popped on right when they should, all the drag-n-dropping worked fine, I was up to my happy eyeballs in library books.

Then Adobe made me do an "update". I've been on here 2 hours, have done everything in this thread (thank you, Tom and other smart people), and it's STILL not recognizing my device. Sigh. Calling B&N.

Thank you for letting me vent. Carry on.

I had the same issues of not being authorized as a user.  I followed the instructions above (using the first postings from 2010) - and it worked so well!  I now have a library book on the nook.  I deleted ADE from the computer and from the nook; signed in to Adobe; and reinstalled ADE.  Dropped, dragged the book to nook........and voila!  THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

I had trouble getting ADE to recognize my nook at first.  Then I unlocked the screen on the nook and it popped up in ADE.  I never deleted any files or played with anything, just unlocked the screen.

And yet another thank you to you!  I spent hours looking for this answer.  Now I know where to look!

Thanks! Wow, I am just so glad I took the time to post the steps that worked for me, after I found this forum. Seems like lots of folks are in the same boat.  If B&N are monitoring this user forum, I sure hope they take note and provide this information to future users in their how-to guide.  Being able to download library books, and buy from other retailers (though I have yet to buy a book from anyone but B&N)  was the defining decision point for me, over the Kindle's proprietary platform.  Making it easier for their customers to do so, would probably result in better word of mouth and more loyal fans.m

They do not cooperate at B & N, as a matter of fact the tech support does not know how to help in any way.  I called them about 12 times now with various questions and they do not know the answers..  The last thing they told me  was that there is no way to download a book unto the Nook that one purchases directly on the net rather than on the Nook  so I asked them why then do they sell it there?  They said one can only purchase books on the Nook, not on on the internet, which of course is not true.  Try going to a actual B & N store, they are more knowledgeable, or here on the Forum.

I am SO thrilled!  I got my Nook for Christmas, and I had never successfully downloaded a library book until I found this thread and went through these steps just today.  I've been happily downloading from B&N without any problems - love Free Fridays - but like so many others, I couldn't get an answer on how to get rid of the "User Not Activated" messages for my library downloads.  It took several tries using these steps, but I've finally got a library book to open on my Nook.  It really does work!

    Thanks again!

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but you guys have more of the answers than I can find anywhere else, so here goes.

I purchased a Nook Color, not a Kindle, specifically so I could borrow library books. The library I use uses Overdrive. I can download that to my Nook just fine. But, I also need Adobe Digital Editions. Every time I try to download that from Adobe, the box says that I need Adobe Flash first. I can't figure out which Adobe Flash to download as they don't seem to have one for Android, which I understand is the OS for Nook.

So, this is where I'm at,

I have Overdrive and ADE (I downloaded via my Mac, pretty sure I got the Adroid version, on my Nook). If I click on them in the download area of my nook I get the message "Install blocked. installation of download apks is not supported." I think that's because I need ADE and for that I need the elusive Adobe Flash.

Anyway, I've worked on this for about 3 days and I am so frustrated. I don't even want to try to call B&N or Adobe. I've seen the comments from others when they tried that.

So, can one of you brilliant, wonderful people out there help me?

Oh, and if I open ADE on my Mac, it does recognize my Nook. I have downloaded the library books to my Mac as I could only hold them a few days. I can read them on my Mac. I would even be happy to just move them via USB to my Nook, but I can't seem to do that either.

Thanks in advance. You will be saving my sanity if you have an answer for me. And, yes, I have looked for the flash problem in this forum and others. I can't find it.

Ok try connecting your Nook to your Mac before you open ADE. Download the book you want from Overdrive in the ADE ePub format, then open ADE on your Mac. Choose Library view, click the book icon on the right of the screen and drag to your Nook icon on the left. It'll tell you the file is copying. Then EJECT your nook and go to My Documents and look under "unshelved". Your book should be there and ready to read. Other than this I don't think you can download from Overdrive direct to your Nook without a PC or Mac, but perhaps others know how you can do that. I do not think you need Flash at all in this scenario. Hope it helps! Good luck.

Just to recap, there's lots of great advice in this forum, if you can sift through it all.  Here's what worked for me, I have a nook wi-fi and use a Mac powerbook laptop.  I got most of this from B&N customer support today, and the missing link I filled in from the forum here:

    1.  De-authorize your computer by choosing command+shift+d

    2.  Uninstall your Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) by dragging it to the trash and then EMPTY THE TRASH

    3.  Restart your computer

    4.  Reinstall ADE

    5.  Reauthorize your computer (apparently it helps to have both your B&N and your Adobe accounts with same username and password)

    6.  Add the content you wish to transfer into your ADE library (this should happen automatically- when you go to open the download, ADE will start up)

    7.  Plug in your Nook (I found it helpful to have ADE closed when I plugged in the Nook, otherwise ADE didn't recognize my device)

    8.  The device set-up assistant should appear and prompt you to authorize your Nook.

If this does NOT happen, restore your Nook to factory settings.  Don't worry, content you have purchased from B&N is not lost, you'll get it back when you reconnect your wi-fi, it'll appear automatically.  But you will have to reconfigure your clock and any book shelves you may have created. Depending on how organized you are this could be a small inconvenience or more time consuming.  Considering the payoff is the ability to download and read books from your library, I'd say it is worth it.

    9.   Authorize your Nook

    10. In library view, click the book title you want to read (right hand side of the ADE screen) and drag it to the Nook icon which should now be appearing on the left side of the ADE screen.

    11. Repeat step 10 for as many titles as you wish to transfer.  Look for the green plus sign and the "copying file X of Y" status bar to know this is working properly.

    12. When the files have completed transferring, EJECT your nook (either right click on your nook drive on your desktop or in Finder)

    13. Locate your transferred content on your Nook by selecting "Go To My Documents" tab in "My Library"

You should be good to go.  It has taken me the better part of a day to figure all this out, hopefully it helps those of you who are having issues and use a Mac system.

    Good luck!

Holy Cow - I just spent 2 of my nights trying to get my nook to recognize books I downloaded from the library.  I finally found you post Tom, and after going through the procedure twice I finally got it to work.  Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.  Any suggestions for getting an audiobook to run at the same time as an e-book?  My daughter wants to listen to a book as she reads it.  Thanks

Depending on your library, you may need a piece of software called Overdrive.  It will download audio onto my mp3.  I haven't tried it with my wife's Nook.  It is free software, and if they don't use Overdrive, I am sure your library will use something else.  If you get it to work on your Nook, post a reply.  Good luck!

For the Literati.....you can view PDF files on the Literati.  Make sure you look under the DOC tab.  You add the PDF file into Adobe Digital Reader and from there drag onto the Literati.  The Literati will show up on the left side of the screen under the Bookshelf title when your Literati is hooked up to your PC or Laptop.  You can see it load onto the Literati when you drag the file.  When you are done, check for additions under your DOC tab.
