Beginning is hard... (saving, downloading and syncing...)

I bought a e-book in epub-format and was advised to read it in Adobe Digital Editions. It opens, but doesn't seem to save. The only book in the library is an e-book that I bought years ago. How can I see the progress of the downloading process? And is it possible to synchronize with the Adobe Viewer app in an iPad?
