Books I returned to libraries and deleted from ADE still return with Errors

My ADE bookshelf is cluttered up with books I have returned to the library.  They do not appear in  my library accounts. I have tried to then Remove from Bookshelf, but they always return with the same red triangle and exclamation point error message if I click on them:

Error getting License. License Server Communication Problem:

E_LIC_ALREADY_RETURNED

I have tried removing all ADE files and books and reinstalling.  I have signed out and signed back in again. Yet everytime I download a borrowed book all the deleted and ghost titles reappear.

How do I exorcise Digital Editions ghosts?
