Cannot download library e-books-need help

I installed Adobe Digital Editions via their website - registered - everything seems fine - EXCEPT every time I try to download an e-book from local library I get the "View Downloads - Windows Internet Explorer" and it will not let me download any books (.acsm)  It works fine on my big Dell PC but not on this cheapo Gateway laptop - which I bought just to be able to read outside.  PLEASE HELP ME.
