device is not appearing under "All items" in menu?

I have successfully downloaded library books to my Kobo e-reader before, but today, having borrowed a book, the book appears on Adobe digital Editions, but the Kobo does not appear - in fact the "devices" section does not appear on the screen, so I cannot sync it to the reader....HELP!
